FROM A SURVIVOR'S PERSPECTIVE!
6 WEEKS > EVERY TUES > 6 — 7.30PM
13 NOV — 18 DEC @ RCG [max.20 SPACES]
«Hi — I'm Arizona, your course leader. I'm a ground fighting specialist (only female BJJ blackbelt in Scotland, 2nd in history) and self defence geek. I've fought all over the world, I've worked as a bouncer and I am a survivor of rape. My 6 week course is the result of many interviews, a lot of research, personal insight and other's experiences. I call it the swiss army knife of self defence training — it covers everything from the freeze response to punches. All you need is yourself and some comfortable clothes. It's open to any age or level of fitness — I'm recovering from back surgery and I can do it.»
WEEK 1: MIND BODY CONNECT
WEEK 2: RISK AWARENESS
WEEK 3: SELF CONFIDENCE
WEEK 4: VERBAL JUDO
WEEK 5: SCENARIO TRAINING
WEEK 6: COMPLEX SITUATIONS
Please note, this event is sponsored by Rape Crisis Grampian therefore is free for attendees. This is a women only event.
Q: Do I have to attend every session?
A: It's best that you are there for every session as each feeds into the next, but if you have to miss one it should be alright as long as you let us know in advance.
Q: I have a disability, can I participate?
A: The course is designed to be suitable for all. It's not real self defence if it only works for regular gym-goes. Just let us know in advance if you have any special needs or requirements.
Q: I am uncomfortable with physical contact, can I still do this?
A: Absolutely, the course is much more than just the physical stuff and there's no pressure to do anything you're uncomfortable with. We can work around your needs and we're there to support you however we can.
Q: I am not very fit/have some injury or ailment, can I really do this?
A: Yes, as above, self defence is as much a mental concept as it is physical. There is still a lot you can do, most of which will probably serve you better and more often than the fighting stuff anyway. However, even the physical bit is at a level which anyone with at least two limbs could do. Yes, you can definitely do this!
Q: What should I wear?
A: Something comfortable that you can move in easily.
Q: I'm nervous!
A: That's alright. We are really lovely, friendly people who go the extra mile to make sure you're comfortable. Our cosy centre on Crown Street is welcoming and homely, we even have some sofas and a garden if you need a quiet moment to yourself. We are really flexible, if you need something just ask.
