FREE EVENT! ALL WELCOME! LOCATION TBA!
In the last few years, a lot of research has surfaced describing an interaction between the gut and the brain. But how does this interaction work? How, and to what extent, can your gut have an influence on your brain? We have invited Dr Alan Walker from University of Aberdeen and Professor Trevor Stone from University of Oxford to tell us more about this fascinating topic.
For the first half of the event, Dr Alan Walker will tell us what ‘the bugs in our guts’ are, and why we need them. He will explain how the microbes in our gut play a key role in our health, and how our diet can affect whether they help or harm us. He will also tell us about some issues in microbiome research, and help us separate ‘truth from hype’.
For the second half, Professor Trevor Stone will tell us in more detail about how the gut interacts with the brain. He has done research on the gut-brain axis, and will explain some of the mechanisms through which it works. He will also mention some clinical implications this might have for mental disorders such as depression and schizophrenia.
After the two talks there will be a 30 minute Q&A session.
This event is for all students and staff, and no background knowledge is required. Hope to see you all there!
